RB Leipzig have let head coach Jesse Marsch go following their 2-1 defeat by Union Berlin on Friday. Leipzig are 11th in the Bundesliga table after 14 games and lost their last three league clashes. They stand no chance of qualifying for the Champions League Round of 16, but could continue in the Europa League if they finish third in their group.
The last round of UCL group games will see Leipzig host Manchester City on Tuesday. With Marsch now out, his assistant coach Achim Beierlorzer will be in charge of the City match. Leipzig look to appoint a permanent manager in the near future.
Oliver Mintzlaff, Leipzig’s chief executive, said “it was not easy to part company with Jesse Marsch, because I hold Jesse in high regard as a person and as a coach”.
“It is a shame that things did not work out as we had hoped with this setup and that this step has now become necessary. Unfortunately, the development we were hoping for and the results needed to achieve our goals for the season have not been achieved,” Mintzlaff explained.
“I also see our players as having a duty and I expect our team, which is very strong in sporting terms, to show its potential and quality on the pitch more consistently than it has done recently,” the official added.
48-year-old Marsch had joined Leipzig this summer, replacing outgoing Julian Nagelsmann. Marsch was on a two-year contract in Leipzig, after having worked with great success at RB Salzburg between 2019 and 2021. In the 2018-2019 season, Marsch was as an assistant coach in Leipzig under new Manchester United boss Ralf Rangnick.
Jesse also served as an assistant in the USMNT staff a decade ago, before becoming Montreal Impact’s manager in 2011. His longest spell came at NY Red Bulls from 2015 to 2018. In 2015, he won the MLS Coach of the Year award. In Austria, he won both the league and Cup with RB Salzburg in each of his two years there.
As a player, Marsch, a former midfielder, made a name for himself at Chicago Fire and Chivas USA, also representing the USMNT twice at senior level.
