A field of top golfers will head to Charlotte, North Carolina, this weekend to take on the toughest finishing stretch in golf when they play the Wells Fargo Championship at the Quail Hollow Club.
Quail Hollow features one of the longest courses on tour – 7,521 yards for a par-71 layout – and ends with a three-hole stretch known as “The Green Mile.â€
Putter lets Thomas down at Valspar Championship
That means that players can expect a challenge at the Wells Fargo Championship this weekend. That doesn’t mean the winner won’t score low: Max Homa won the tournament in 2019 by shooting 15-under. But the difficult finishing holes mean that even the leader can take nothing for granted until they drop their final putt.
Jon Rahm comes into the tournament as the +1000 favorite, according to FanDuel Sportsbook. Rahm has shown consistency in recent outings, finishing fifth at the Masters last month and taking seventh at the Zurich Classic with partner Ryan Palmer. While Rahm hasn’t yet won a PGA Tour event this year, he currently ranks third in the Official World Golf Rankings.
Justin Thomas (+1100) enters the Wells Fargo Championship as a virtual co-favorite. Thomas won the Players Championship earlier this season, but has struggled a bit as of late. He played well at the Valspar Championship last weekend, but finished in 13th place as he failed to find his putting stroke.
“It wasn’t like something was really that off,†Thomas said on Wednesday. “I hit a lot of really, really good putts, a lot of quality putts. Everything fundamentally was pretty good, just the ball wasn’t going in. You have weeks like that, but obviously it doesn’t get that bad very often and hopefully not ever.â€
Bryson DeChambeau (+1300) also ranks among the favorites heading into the Wells Fargo Championship. DeChambeau’s long game could play well at Quail Hollow, but he’s struggled as of late, finishing 46th at the Masters.
Rory looks to tune his game at Wells Fargo Championship
Rory McIlroy will also play this weekend and comes in as a +1700 pick to take the championship. McIlroy has fallen to 15th in the world rankings after being No. 1 when the PGA Tour paused last March for the COVID-19 pandemic. But McIlroy believes this could be the weekend where he starts to turn things around.

“I feel like I’m on a pretty good trajectory at the minute,†McIlroy told reporters. “I feel better about my game than I did flying home from Augusta on Friday night, put it that way. I’ve worked a little bit on it, sort of just tried to understand what I do well. I guess trying to sort of focus on my strengths. I think I’ve neglected my strengths a little bit the past couple of months.â€
Viktor Hovland and Xander Schauffele join McIlroy with +1700 odds to win the Wells Fargo Championship, with Webb Simpson (+2100) also among the favorites.
