Trendy Pick or Solid Masters Favorite?
DeChambeau’s victory at the Rocket Mortgage Classic on Sunday closed the gap between him and McIlroy. With four months until the tournament tees off, it might get even closer. DeChambeau has been the better golfer of the two over the past two months.
During the 12-week break because of the COVID-19 global pandemic, DeChambeau spent the time transforming his body. He showed up at May’s Charles Schwab Challenge with 30 pounds more muscle, and a mindset to overpower every golf course he plays.
“I think the most important thing is that I’ve shown people that there’s another way to do it,†DeChambeau said on Sunday.
The change is working for him. DeChambeau hasn’t finished outside of the top 10 in the four events he’s played since the tour resumed. McIlroy’s best finish in three events is 11th.

DeChambeau Tops at PGA Championship, US Open
While McIlroy is favored at most sportsbooks for the Masters, DeChambeau has a lock on the other two majors. He’s the 10/1 selection at the Westgate to win the PGA Championship and the US Open. He is also the favorite at DraftKings for the PGA Championship, and the co-favorite with McIlroy at the US Open.
DeChambeau says it’s satisfying to see his work pay off, and hopes it continues.
“This is a little emotional for me because I did do something a little different. I changed my body, changed my mindset in the game and I was able to accomplish a win while playing a completely different style of golf,†DeChambeau said. “And it’s pretty amazing to see that and I hope it’s an inspiration to a lot of people that if they set their mind to it, you can accomplish it.â€
